Hope: When Conventional Treatment Fails

Professor Allen Frances’ blog about nidotherapy on the Huffington Post asked an important question about the apparent futility of some treatments for mental illness and what we can do to continue to help patients who do not respond to conventional psychiatry.

Picking up on Professor Peter Tyrer’s pioneering work on nidotherapy, Professor Frances bemoans the alternative, the status quo of the “unconscious and unwarranted assumption that there is a cure for every illness” and use of “careless polypharmacy”.  Instead, he – and Professor Tyrer – are looking for a more common sense approach to helping people with mental health problems.
